Dining solo is awkward for many people, but it doesn’t have to be. In reality, however, dining alone can be a deeply rewarding experience of self-care, introspection and the simple pleasures of a good meal. You don’t have to wait for company; you can learn to appreciate yourself for company, and turn dining out into a mindful ritual. Here’s how to get the most out of eating out alone.

    Choose the Right Spot

Choose a restaurant that is comfortable for you. I shall choose cafes, casual dining places or those with a cozy atmosphere in between. The window seat, the nook you can boil yourself down to.

    Start Small

If it all sounds a bit nerve-racking, try breakfast or lunch. They’re lighter, less formal meals than dinner. If you’re feeling more self-assured, experiment with fancier places.

    Bring a Companion Item

It may even help to just walk while carrying a book, journal or your headphones during the first few days. Such items give you something to do as you wait for your meal.

    Be Present with Your Food

Dining alone is an opportunity to really savor your meal. Take note of the flavours, textures and how they’re plated. Take your time to eat and enjoy each mouthful in peace.

    Connect with the Surroundings

Just watch the people, listen to the background music and take in the atmosphere. Being mindful can transform the experience into something grounding.

    Treat It as Self-Care

Consider solo dining as an act of self-love. You are allowing time to rest, play and rejuvenate. It’s not that you’re alone, but that you like your own company.

    Try Something New

When you’re by yourself, you can test out dishes that you would never make for other people. Take this as an opportunity to try new cuisines and flavours.
